Following the very successful encounter between the American vocalist Amp Fiddler and the Jamaican legends Sly & Robbie, the Strut label has added two new collaborations to its Inspiration Information series. Founded in 1999 in London, Strut Records has been busy reissuing lost gems, from 1970s Nigerian funk to Italian disco via Caribbean soul, retro Kid Creole tracks or mixes by the mythical Grandmaster Flash. The idea behind their new Inspiration Information initiative is simple – bring two artistic universes together in the studio, and see what happens…

First up, the exceptional voice of Studio One legend Horace Andy meets the electronic wizardry of Ashley Beedle. Before he became an acid house DJ and prolific remixer, the 1980s saw Beedle dedicated to soundsystems, and later he worked with X-Press-2 and Black Science Orchestra. The meeting here produces some unusual sounding dubs, with Horace Andy’s legendary flow rising over sustained electronic beats. It all feels like a blast of fresh air, even the cover of the StonesAngie stays bang on track.

The next album in the series celebrates the meeting between the great Ethiopian bandleader, vibes player and father of Ethio-Jazz Mulatu Astatke, and Stone Throw’s The Heliocentrics, former DJ Shadow backing band. With Mulatu Astatke, they deliver a killer groove - abstract hip-hop, jazz with twists of Coltrane and Ethiopia and other-worldly rhythms. The intensity and quality don’t let up for a second. Essential listening and a must for your collection!
